I am a canoe named Biscuit. My buddy Gabriel designed me and I am pretty cool. My dream is to float from the Tongue River west of Cavalier, North Dakota, USA all the way to the Hudson Bay in Manitoba, Canada.
I will travel through different rivers and lakes on my journey to the Hudson Bay. First, I will launch into the Tongue River, which is neat, because my builder Gabriel lives out by the Tongue River and crosses over it on a bridge almost every day. After I float along slowly snaking north and east, IՉll switch from the Tongue River into the Pembina River. IՉll stay on the Pembina River for a short ride, then IՉll scoot into the mighty Red River. The big mighty Red will be rolling fast this time of year. IՉll keep floating north 0n the Red River all the way up to the freezing cold Lake Winnipeg. IՉll be a little dizzy from the cold, snaky, zig zaggy ride. IՉll hang out at Lake Winnipeg for a little while, I hope it is thawed. Then, IՉll keep floating north and east as I get closer to leaving the big lake. By then, I will be getting used to the cold and I will be ready to head out. IՉll be so excited to slip into the Nelson River, because my next stop will be the Hudson Bay. Finally, my dream will come true when I float out into the Hudson Bay.
When I am floating down all those different rivers and lakes, I will pass by and through some different small towns, larger towns and one huge city. My first town in sight will be Cavalier, ND. Gabriel goes to school in Cavalier. I will scoot through there quickly. I might see kids playing in the park there. Maybe Gabriel could see me again as I sail through. IՉll continue past Cavalier heading towards Bathgate, ND. After I wave goodbye to Bathgate, IՉll cruize past Neche, ND heading towards Pembina, ND. IՉll make a big switch from the Pembina to the Red River at Pembina. IՉll also go from North Dakota, USA to Manitoba, Canada just a little past there. Once IՉm in Canada, IՉll cruise by Emerson, Manitoba on a northbound track past St. Jean Baptiste, Morris and Ste. Agathe. My sights will be set on that huge city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Once IՉm there, IՉll zig zag my way through still heading north and east. When I blow out of Winnipeg, IՉll go by a few more towns until I go past Selkirk. Once IՉm past Selkirk, the towns will start to get farther apart. The very last town that I will go by before I reach the Hudson Bay is a ghost town called Port Nelson, Manitoba.
While I am making this huge trip through the waterways, IՉll see many plants and animals that I wonՉt forget. Towards the beginning, IՉll see white tailed deer munching on acorns that fell from oak trees. Elk will be slightly off in the distance in the ponderosa pine trees. Beavers will be eating on mushrooms and chomping on willow trees. The canadian geese will be flying over me. There will be little groups of minnows along the way too. Wood frogs will be gathered where the ferns grow. Black bears will be seen eating from dogwood berry, blueberry and wild raspberry trees. Catfish, walleyes and northern pike will also be swimming with me in the water. When I get to the Hudson Bay IՉll see lowlands covered by swampy forests. The soil there is water logged where stunted tamarack and black spruce grow. Cod and salmon are common fish. I could see walrus, dolphins, killer whales, and polar bears!
I hope my dream of reaching the Hudson Bay from the Tongue River comes true. Until I reach the Hudson Bay, I, GabrielՉs canoe Biscuit, will keep dreaming about the adventure and the awesome things I will see on my way.
