My canoe will make it all the way to Hudson Bay. I hope it will see amazing things and meet wolves. Along the way, my canoeՉs journey will be wonderous.
About two days after being launched in the Sheyenne River, Canoe was swept into the Goose River. Roots tangled at the bottom of the canoe. The current started to get faster, fast enough that Canoe was soon in Turtle River.
Now that Canoe was back on track, he saw glorious things. Beavers hard at work. Fish beneath him, swimming freely. The Turtle River was gorgeous. However, now the Red River was in sight, which meant the journey was back on. As he fell into the Red River, a doe poked her head out of the flash of trees as if to say, ՉGoodbye, Canoe! I hope you make it.Չ
Now that he was on the Red River, he felt less free to travel. He wanted to see things no other canoe named Canoe had seen before. He wanted to see the sunrise bloom over the horizon in the early mornings. He wanted to see the moon look down at him and wave. It felt very unfair to Canoe that he never got to see that on the Red River. Even on open prairie, he couldnՉt. However, he had to stay focused!
One morning, about ten years after being launched, he saw a pack of wolves and he thought, Canada! There was a big lake in front of him. Not big, huge. Glee laughed through him for a moment then he realized, it was a lake. Not Hudson Bay or the ocean.
When he looked around, he saw the most beautiful, and first, close up sunrise ever. The colors bloomed across the sky and the lake reflected it. Except it wasnՉt a lake at all. Canoe had been on Winnipeg Lake for four years. This was really Hudson Bay! Canoe had realized that just then. All those repairs and repaints had finally paid off! He had made it to his destination at last. տ
