My canoeՉs name is Sailor, and I have many dreams for her. Once I release her from Fargo, ND in May 2023, I hope she makes it to the Labrador Sea which is a little past Hudson Bay. Lots of people hopefully pick her up along the way too. My hope is that she sees plenty of beautiful sunrises and sunsets because she looks like one. The first living things she will maybe see is a huge northern pike and salamanders in the river. The pike might even bump her from under the water. After a few long weeks Sailor will reach the city of Grand Forks where she might see a group of large carp. The waves of the river will keep pushing her along and sometimes she might get lonely but all the wildlife gives her lots of company. Eventually Sailor will also reach Polk County and will see the fields of spring wheat. She might get thrown over and under the crashing river waves and some elegant swans will watch helplessly. Then my canoe will make it to Walsh County. She is getting closer to the border of Canada. Sometimes all the trees bordering the riverbanks seem to close in on Sailor, and the width of the river gets wider and skinnier all the time. Soon she will reach Pembina, which is also right by the border of North Dakota and Canada.
Once she passes the border this is where the channel catfish will watch her journey. The dirty muskrats will play by the shores and run along next to her. The aspen trees might dance with the breeze that helps push Sailor along. The Manitoba maples will too. These are all in Winnipeg now and my canoe will quickly find its way to Lake Winnipeg. It has been a long journey for Sailor, maybe a little over 7 weeks. The refreshing waters of the Nelson River are coming up too. Sailor will love the next bird she might see with the pretty, white spots on its face. ItՉs called a Surf Scoter. Also, she loves Arctic animals which is perfect because she will approach the Hudson Bay. Beluga whales and polar bears swim the waters of the Hudson. After this long, long journey Sailor will flow through the Hudson Bay to the Hudson Strait. Then she will head North East and finally reach the Labrador Sea!
